My experience is that a max ratio of 50/50 works, but that 25/75 seems to be better and does not affect the drying time. When doing this I always need to build the color. The Minwax pre-stain does work well if you leave it to cure a full day prior to staining (contrary to the instructions on the can). I used Minwax stains for years, and with the pre-stain conditioner (cured a full day) and lots of care you can get good results.
